Altt}hough it was a nice program overall, it was slowand very limited. My next venture was the SYNCRON calendar program writu}ten bySynapse. Although the displays were attractive and user friendly, the program took too long to operate, used a whole v}disk, and only kept two years per data disk. SYNCRON is good for keepingjournals or diaries on, but for daily memos it provw}ed to be rathercumbersome. Thus the Calendar was born. I included the features which Ineeded and also some suggestionx}s from friends and colleagues. I'msure you will benefit from the program as much as I do. I didn'tbother with fancy titley}s or packaging to help cut cost and passthe savings on to you. I also didn't bother with any protection schemes or detiz}cateddisk formats. This will allow you to transfer the Calendar forbacking up or multiple data disks. Also the calendar d{}ata may be stored on the same disk as theCalendar program, thus avoiding disk swapping. I won't harp on andon about piracy|} or illeaglebackups. I'll mearly mention that it will only raise the prices offuture projects.BASIC OPERATION The C}}alendar program is able to display the days for any monthand any year from 0 AD through the year 65,000 (hopefully I'll writ~}e anew program by then). There are three types of messages to enterunder any day: memos, global, and time messages. T}o pick a day to enter a message on, use the curser controlkeys (even without pressing the control button). If you desire a}different month press the parenthases keys "()" (even withoutpressing the shift button). The left parenthese will decrease }themonth and the right one will increase the month. To alter theyear, use the same method with the "<>" keys. The mos}t used entries will most likely be the memos. Positionthe calendar curser on any given day and press return. A windowwill} appear over the calendar and allow you to enter any memo forthat day. Such memos would be anything from car check ups tot}rips to grandmothers house. Pressing "G" will add a global message to the calendar. Globalmessages are similar to memo}s except that the entry will appearin the same month and day for any given year. Such an entry would bebirthdays, annivers}aries, or any annual event. The third message type is a time entry, obtained by pressing"T". It looks similar to a mem}o except for the time margin on theleft side of the window. This entry will most likely be used bybusiness men (and women)} so the times range from 7:00 to 5:00(during business hours). The tab key may be used to jump to the endof the time margin} and begin a single time entry. Such entriesmay be meetings, lunch appointments, or other time relatedactivities. If }you wish to set an appointment on times that are notexactly on the hour you may want to use the following pattern. Once in}the time entry, press return until you arrive at the particular hourto change; 12:00 for example. Pressing the tab key will} positionyou just beyond the last zero. Pressing the delete/backspace keytwice will delete the two zeros in the 12:00 peri}od. Now type in 15to change the time from 12:00 to 12:15. Press another space andenter a message like "lunch with the bos}s". Of course doing thismeans you forfit the 12:00 position so beware. [RETURN]=memo add/edit G=global add/edit T}=time add/editEDIT MODE On any day, pressing the return, "G", or "T" keys willdisplay the edit window, that days mes}sage (if it exists), and sendyou into the edit mode. This mode will allow modifications oradditions to be made on any entr}y in the calendar. Most of the keysperform their normal editing function; return, del/bs, insert, clear. The escape key wi}ll terminate the editing session andsave the entry into the calendar. The option button will abort anychanges to the curre}nt entry and return you to the calendar. Thestart button will print the current message to the printer (if it isturned on)}. After a message has been entered a symbol will appear on theday you entered the message. A symbol in the center of t}he daywill indicate a memo exists. A symbol to the right indicates aglobal entry, the symbol to the left, a time entry. } [ESC]=exit message window [OPTION]=abort current message [START]=print current messageDELETING MESSAGES } To delete a message from the calendar, position the cursor overthe day you wish to delete a message from. Once positioned,}press "D" to delete a memo message. A window at the bottom of thescreen will ask "ARE YOU SURE?" verifying the operation. } Answerwith a "Y" if you wish to continue the delete or any other key willabort the deletion process. To delete a glob}al message press "K" to kill the message. Pressing an "E" will erase a time message. D=delete memo K=kill global }entry E=erase time entryLOADING AND SAVING The messages entered into the calendar are stored in memory andmust }be saved to disk before quitting the session. To save themessages in memory press the "S" key. A window will appear on the}bottom of the screen asking for a file name. Enter a filename usingthe standard naming convention; eight characters max, a}ll capitalletters, beginning with A-Z, three character extender. If you wish tochange the drive number, position the curso}r over the drive numberand enter the new number. After the name has been entered, themessages will be saved and you are re}turned to the calendar. Pressing "L" will ask for a filename to load from the disk.Use the same naming convention as wi}th the save function to retrivethe messages. S=save messages L=load messagesUse the same naming convention as wiYOTHER DOS FUNCTIONS To look at the index (directory) of a disk, press the"I" key and enter the drive number you wish to} look at. To protect afile, press the "#" key. To unprotect a file, press the "U"key. If you wish to rename a file, pres}s "R" and enter the currentfilename to change. Then enter the filename you wish to change it to. I=index disk directo}ry #=protect file U=unprotect file R=rename filePRINTING At some point you will probably want to list }your messagesto the printer. Pressing "P" will send you to the print menu whereyou may choose to print the messages or the} actual calanderitself. If you choose the messages you will then be asked if you wantthe messages to go to the screen or t}he printer. Sending them to thescreen will allow scanning of messages without printing them. If the calander option wa}s chosen, it will skip the outputmenu and will assume you want the calander to be printed on theprinter since it is already} displayed on the screen. The next menu will ask that days you want printed; the currentyear, current month, or by user} input. If the current year ormonth option is selected, the program will continue to the nextfunction. If the user input }is chosen, you will be asked to inputthe start day. Position the calander cursor on the day, month, and year to begin the p}rinting and press return. You will then beasked for the day in which you want the printing to end. If the calander mod}e was chosen earlier, the program willbegin printing the actual calander to the printer. If the messageswere selected in t}he first menu, another menu will show whichmessages it will print or display; time, memos, or global. To turn aparticular }type on or off, position the cursor on the appropriate lineand press the left or right arrow keys. A "YES" indicates that i}twill print that message type while a "NO" will not. Pressing returnfrom this menu will begin the print or display of mess}ages. P=print messages or calander CALANDER MESSAGES --- TO PRINTER TO SCREEN BY CURRENT YEAR BY }CURRENT MONTH BY USER INPUT --- START DAY END DAY TIME MESSAGES NO MEMO MESSAGES YES } GLOBAL MESSAGES YESFIND To find a particular phrase in the message files, press "F" and awindow will appear at th}e bottom of the screen asking for your searchphrase. Enter the phrase and press return to begin the search process. Once a} match has occurred, the message containing the match willbe displayed on the screen along with a find menu at the bottom of}the screen. From here you can press the escape key to exit, return to find the next occurrence, "F" to search on a new phra}se, or"P" to print the found message to the printer. F=find phrase [RETURN]=find next occur. [ESCA}PE]=exit F=new find P=print messageHELP If you need help while in the calander press "H" to displ}ay ashort help screen. This is just a brief description of the keyboardcommands you may execute. Press any key to exit th}e help screen. If you don't like to memorize the keyboard commands from thecalander you don't have to use most of them.} Simply run the calandercurser off the bottom of the calander and you will be put in themain menu on the bottom of the scr}een. Run the curser along themenu until you land on the option of your choice, then press return. H=helpCHANGE } If you dislike the calander colors I have chosen or if you wantJulian dates instead of standard dates, press "C" to enable} thechange menu. The change menu will allow you to alter many items onthe calander and save the changes for later use. So}me of the optionsare mentioned below. C=changeCOLOR Press return on the color option and another menu will app}earallowing you to change the background, letter, and bordercolors. Position the curser on the item you wish to change and} pressreturn. The color will change every time you press return on anycolor item. The colors will cycle thru all 128 choi}ces as they aredisplayed on the screen. When finished altering the colors, position the curser back over the "color" option} to exit the colormenu.VERIFY If you notice that every time you delete a message, the programwill ask you "ARE YOU S}URE?". You may eliminate this step by turningoff the verify. Pressing return on this option will toggle the verifyon or o}ff.MESSAGE CHARACTERS If you wish to change the symbols on the calander for memos, time messages, or globals, press re}turn on this option to displayanother menu. The first three choices allow you to alter thesymbols displayed on the calande}r. The fourth choice allows you tochange the character that creates the calander border then calanderis sent to the printe}r. Position the curser on the option you wish to change and pressreturn. A window will appear with the current symbol }on the rightside. Press any key that you wish to replace it with and press returnto exit the window.TAB LENGTH Pres}sing return on this option will display the current tablength. Using the left and right arrow keys you may alter the length}of the tab from zero to seven.SAVE DEFAULTS If you want these changes to be in effect the next time you runthe calan}der, put a disk with the calander program in drive one andpress return. This will create a file called "CALANDER.DEF" and w}illload the changed defaults.ESCAPE KEY The escape key will get you out of most menu operations. Pressing escape wil}l back you out and send you to the previous menuoption. It just may be the second most important key on the keyboard.WELL}, THAT'S IT I think that covers all the options. I hope you will get manyyears of use out of it while having fun skipp}ing thru all of the menus. This project was quite a challenge for me but I think I got thiswindowing thing down pat now. My} next project will hopefully be adatabase program in the same fast, simple, windowy way.
